When Starbucks first appeared in its stores in the 2015 Cold Brew Coffee, sales of frozen drinks increased by 20 percent. The series did not invent the concept, of course. Cold coffee has long been a delicacy from New Orleans, and Blue Bottle and Stumptown began adopting technology in early August.

However, Starbucks brought a cold drink to the mainstream. These days, most coffee companies, from Dunkin ‘Donuts to Devotion, a cafe in New York City, offer year-round. The center of the cold boiler is quite stable on the shelf, as are many packed iterations.

Despite its wide availability and appeal, however, the questions plagued the category. What is the difference between iced coffee and cold drink? And why does the latter cost so much?
